THE RIVERS STATE Executive Council has greenlit a monumental project with the approval of a contract worth N222.1 billion for the construction of the main Trans-Kalabari Road in a decision reached during a council meeting chaired by Governor Siminalayi Fubara and attended by Deputy Governor Prof Ngozi Odu, with other council members at the Government House on Wednesday.
After the meeting, Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joseph Johnson, revealed that the project would be financed through savings from the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
He disclosed that a 30 percent mobilization fee had already been disbursed for the project, which is slated for completion within 32 months.
Johnson outlined the scope of the project, stating that the Trans-Kalabari Road would span approximately 2 kilometers from NSS Pathfinder near Mgbuodohia Community to Aker Base Road in Rumuolumeni Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
He emphasized that the project would traverse challenging terrain, including swamps and rivers, necessitating the construction of multiple bridges, decking, and piling works.
Highlighting the state’s commitment to self-sustainability, Johnson stressed that the project would be entirely funded through IGR, without resorting to external borrowing. He underscored the state’s track record of internally financing road projects, citing the Trans-Kalabari Road as the latest endeavor in this regard.
The commissioner also celebrated the state’s achievements in sports, including Rivers United’s victory in the Nigeria Premier Football League U17 Youth League and successes in national beach volleyball, chess, and table tennis competitions.
He lauded the Rivers Hoppers Basketball Club for qualifying for the final phase of the NBA competition in Kigali, Rwanda, underscoring the state’s growing prominence in sports on the continent.
In her remarks, acting Director-General of Rivers State Bureau of Public Procurement (RSBOPP), Dr. Ine Briggs, affirmed the diligent management of the contract proceedings. She assured that all necessary procurement procedures had been followed in accordance with the Rivers State Public Procurement Law 2008 as amended, culminating in the issuance of a certificate of no objection for the contract to be awarded to Lubrick Construction Company Limited.
