LASPA Debunks Parking Charges for Lagos Churches and Worshippers

By Jemimah Wellington, JKNMedia Reporter

THE LAGOS State Parking Authority (LASPA) has clarified recent concerns sparked by a social media post.

The post falsely claimed that starting October 2024, LASPA would charge churches and worshippers for parking on streets around places of worship.

LASPA has confirmed that this information is incorrect.

The Lagos State government will not impose parking fees on churches or worshippers.

Instead, LASPA is introducing a new parking policy aimed at reducing traffic congestion across Lagos.

Like many major cities, Lagos faces a high demand for parking.

The new regulated on-street parking model, approved earlier this year, is designed to manage parking resources more effectively.

This model was announced at a stakeholder forum on February 14, 2024, at the Lagos Marriott Hotel, Ikeja. Representatives from religious organizations and other stakeholders attended.

LASPA has informed these groups about the upcoming changes.

The policy targets improved traffic flow and parking management, not specific religious groups.

LASPA’s statement, signed by General Manager Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, emphasizes that the goal is to update all stakeholders about the new parking scheme.

Lagos State has marked suitable roads for on-street parking in areas like Ikeja, Surulere, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, and Lekki, adding about 1,800 new parking spaces.

The communications sent to religious institutions were to inform them about their roles and the costs associated with using these new parking lots.

These facilities will be managed by concessionaires under LASPA’s supervision.

For more information, LASPA can be contacted at 02-01-2275230 or 02-01-2275231, or visited at 36b Sasegbon Street, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

Further details are available on their website: www.laspa.lg.gov.ng.
