NYSC Confirms No Plans to Adjust Corps Members’ Stipends

By Jemimah Wellington, JKNewsMedia Reporter

THE NATIONAL Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has dismissed recent social media claims that it will increase corps members’ allowances to ₦70,000.

Rather, the NYSC clarified that there has been no official directive or plan to adjust corps members’ stipends in line with the new minimum wage.

According to Eddy Megwa, Director of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC, the reports circulating online are incorrect.

The NYSC has not received any official orders from the government to implement this wage increase.

The confusion stems from the recent signing of the Minimum Wage Act by President Bola Tinubu, which raises the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.

However, this change does not extend to the allowances for corps members.

The NYSC emphasized that corps members should disregard these misleading reports. They are advised to follow official communication channels for accurate information.

The Corps warned against the spread of misinformation by bloggers and social media influencers, urging them to avoid making unauthorized statements about the NYSC.

Previously, in 2020, the NYSC had raised corps members’ allowances from ₦19,800 to ₦33,000 following an increase in the national minimum wage.

The recent wage increase is part of a broader effort by the government to address the rising cost of living, which has surged due to fuel subsidy removal and the floating of the naira.
