Realtors Urge Government Intervention as High Rent Costs Soar in Asaba

By Olivia Ambrose, JKNewsMedia Intern

RISING RENT prices in Asaba have become a growing concern for residents, with local realtors calling for the Delta State Government’s intervention.

High Chief Nnamdi Ogbonma, President General of the Association of Organized Realtors, Asaba/Okpanam, highlighted the worrying increase in housing costs during an interview with a media outfit on its current affairs programme.

Ogbonma pointed out that the activities of fraudulent realtors were contributing to the inflated prices, with many unsuspecting tenants falling victim to scams.

He explained that while rising costs of building materials also play a role, the significant influx of people with illicit wealth, particularly from online fraud schemes, is driving up demand and artificially raising prices.

“Many individuals involved in illegal activities offer significantly higher amounts for rent, pushing prices beyond the reach of average citizens,” Ogbonma said.

To curb the issue, Ogbonma’s association has called for a collaboration with the State Ministries of Housing and Lands.

He emphasized the need for strict regulation of realtors and urged residents to ensure they deal only with registered agents to avoid being defrauded.

His association also stands ready to work with the government on low-cost housing projects to bring some relief to Asaba residents.
