AIMING TO reduce Nigeria’s high cancer mortality rate, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), in collaboration with TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, SAPETRO, CNOOC, and PRIME 130, has launched an advanced mammography centre at the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
This new facility, following an earlier centre in Garkida, Adamawa, is part of NNPC’s ongoing cancer screening programs designed to improve early detection and treatment access nationwide.
Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), Mr. Bala Wunti, represented by Mr. Sani Kabo, Head of Business Services, described the centre as a testament to NNPC Ltd’s commitment to healthcare.
He affirmed its alignment with NNPC GCEO Mr. Mele Kyari’s vision of strengthening Nigeria’s medical infrastructure, envisioning it as a key resource for timely cancer diagnosis under the state government’s guidance.
TotalEnergies Country Chair Mr. Matthieu Bouyer, represented by Acting CSR General Manager Mrs. Tonye Osifo, noted that the mammography centre is among 84 healthcare projects TotalEnergies has contributed since 2016.
This initiative, part of TotalEnergies’ global #WorkingWithCancer campaign, underscores the company’s dedication to addressing healthcare challenges through strategic partnerships.
Equipped with Senographe Pristina 3D technology, digital breast tomosynthesis, stereotactic biopsy capabilities, and the ability to perform over 120 screenings daily, the centre boosts cancer diagnostic services across Nasarawa State and the North Central region.
Additionally, the facility offers treatment rooms, a radiologists’ office, and a 20-person waiting area, creating a comfortable and efficient environment for both patients and medical staff.
