Global Efforts to End HIV Bolstered on World AIDS Day

By Joke Kujenya
THE ONGOING fight against the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains a global priority as communities, governments, and organisations unite to confront the epidemic’s challenges.

Marking World AIDS Day 2024, advocates highlight the importance of collective action to sustain and accelerate progress in tackling HIV as a public health threat.

The theme for this year, “Collective Action: Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress,” underscores the necessity for sustained global solidarity, investments in reducing transmission, and improving access to treatment.

Efforts aim to advance partnerships that ensure locally led and community-driven responses to HIV challenges.

The United Statses President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has played a pivotal role in saving over 25 million lives and enabling more than 5.5 million babies to be born HIV-free in 55 countries.

Since 2003, the programme, with active involvement from USAID, has supported over seven million people annually with lifesaving treatment and one million with HIV prevention medication.

Globally, HIV infections persist at 1.3 million cases annually.

Advocates stress the importance of enduring collaboration among partner country governments, civil society, faith-based organisations, and researchers.

USAID remains committed to supporting innovative approaches and strengthening leadership within affected communities.

World AIDS Day honours those living with and affected by HIV, remembering lives lost while renewing the pledge to end HIV as a public health threat by 2030.

This year’s observance reflects a shared resolve to galvanise global efforts and sustain transformative partnerships in the journey toward an HIV-free future.
