WIDESPREAD CONSUMER complaints about poor service delivery and exploitative practices have prompted the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to initiate a comprehensive inquiry into key players in Nigeria’s banking, telecommunications, and aviation sectors.
These inquiries, scheduled for December 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively, aim to address consumer grievances and enforce accountability under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.
Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) faces scrutiny over persistent network failures that restrict customers’ access to funds and disrupt online banking.
MTN Nigeria will respond to allegations of undelivered data services, unexplained data depletion, and inadequate customer support.
Similarly in aviation, Air Peace Limited must address complaints about exploitative ticket pricing, including sharp increases in advance bookings on domestic routes.
Moreover, the FCCPC will rely on Sections 17, 18, 32, 33, 80, and 110-113 of the FCCPA to conduct these inquiries.
These provisions empower the Commission to investigate practices that undermine consumer rights, create market disruptions, or encourage unfair competition.
The inquiries are also expected to create a platform where companies clarify business practices, address consumer concerns, and comply with regulatory standards.
Companies under investigation must appear before the FCCPC on designated dates, provide explanations, and cooperate in resolving complaints.
The FCCPC says it remains committed to ensuring a fair marketplace and protecting consumers from exploitative practices.
Nigerians are encouraged to report issues to the FCCPC through its official channels to strengthen the Commission’s efforts in safeguarding consumer rights.
