UPHOLDING TRANSPARENCY in its bursary scheme, Delta State has enabled 32,000 students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria to benefit.
The Executive Secretary of the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, Dr Godfrey Enita, highlighted the meticulous screening process during an interview with Delta Revealed.
According to Dr Enita, over 40,000 applications were received for the 2024 bursary scheme. However, stringent checks using the National Identification Number (NIN) system uncovered attempts by non-Deltans, especially from neighbouring states, to infiltrate the scheme.
“We aim to ensure only genuine students of Delta origin benefit. Screening reduced the pool to 32,000 qualified applicants,” he said.
Eligibility criteria include being in the second year of study or above, maintaining a minimum 2.2 GPA, and providing valid NIN verification.
Dr Enita praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his swift approval of the bursary fund and dedication to student welfare, including provisions for children of deceased civil servants and law school students, who each receive ₦100,000.
Dr Enita urged Delta students to leverage the available scholarship schemes, lamenting poor participation in such opportunities.
He commended the state government for digitising the bursary process to eliminate fraud and reiterated the governor’s passion for educational development, particularly for vulnerable groups.
