Resignations of ASUU PhD Members Over Univ’s Poor Management, Unpaid Allowances

By Jemimah Wellington, JKNewsMedia Reporter

OVER 30 MEMBERS of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have resigned from Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) in Bauchi State, citing poor management and unfavorable working conditions.

Namo Timothy, ASUU’s Zonal Coordinator for Bauchi, disclosed the mass resignation during a press conference on Friday at the university’s Yuli Campus.

He warned that the university is on the verge of collapse due to years of mismanagement and neglect of staff welfare.

Timothy emphasized that the state government must intervene to avoid a complete breakdown of industrial peace.

The university owes over N650 million in Earned Academic Allowances and Excess Workload Allowances dating back to 2012, while staff lack a pension and death benefit scheme.

The appointment of an underqualified bursar also violated the institution’s employment guidelines, further worsening the staff morale.

The ASUU then intensified calls for urgent intervention warning that the institution and emphasized that ASUU can no longer guarantee industrial harmony at SAZU unless the Bauchi State government declares a state of emergency.

As things stand, the poor conditions have led 30 PhD holders to resign and seek better opportunities elsewhere.
