MISLEADING CLAIMS about the completion status of BUA Group’s Akwa Ibom refinery have been dismissed.
The company, in a statement, clarified that its 200,000-barrels-per-day crude oil refinery is not yet 90% complete but remains on schedule for delivery by the end of 2025.
In a statement released on Sunday, BUA assured the public of steady progress on the refinery project while urging caution against misinformation.
The facility, designed to produce Euro-V fuels like petrol, diesel, and jet fuel, as well as polypropylene, is set to strengthen Nigeria’s refining capacity and energy security.
The Abdul Samad Rabiu-led conglomerate revealed that the Akwa Ibom refinery project aligns with its decade-long $3.5 billion investment in 12 industrial ventures.
These include a mini-LNG plant and hybrid power facilities contributing to over 1,000MW of installed captive power generation capacity.
“Construction is progressing steadily in collaboration with our partners. We remain on track to meet our delivery timelines,” the company stated, while emphasising its commitment to transparency.
BUA further highlighted that the refinery employs advanced technologies to ensure minimal environmental impact and optimal production efficiency.
Once completed, the project aims to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on fuel imports, positioning the country as a net exporter of petroleum products.
The company encouraged the public to verify updates through its official channels, avoiding misleading information.
“We appreciate the interest and enthusiasm for this transformative project and will continue providing accurate updates as milestones are achieved,” BUA stated.
The Akwa Ibom refinery adds to ongoing advancements in Nigeria’s oil sector, complementing the Dangote Refinery’s 650,000 barrels-per-day facility and rehabilitation efforts at the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries.
Together, these projects signal a significant leap towards self-reliance in petroleum products for Nigeria.
