RISING CONCERNS about the impact of recent telecommunications tariff adjustments have prompted regulatory agencies to ramp up oversight.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, guaranteeing consumer protection while addressing industry sustainability.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the FCCPC Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Ondaje Ijagwu, emphasised that telecom operators must deliver measurable improvements in network reliability, speed, accessibility, and customer service as part of any tariff adjustments.
He noted that tariff changes must directly translate into better service for consumers.
Ijagwu lauded the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for adopting a deliberate approach to the adjustments.
The NCC, last week, approved a 50% increase, significantly lower than the over 100% hike initially proposed by telecom operators.
This decision, he said, reflects a thoughtful balance between industry sustainability and consumer interests.
The NCC also directed telecom operators to ensure transparent pricing and eliminate hidden charges.
Service providers must now clearly disclose costs, validity periods, and specific plan inclusions through mandatory disclosure tables.
He reiterated that this measure aims to help consumers make informed decisions without fear of unexpected charges.
Highlighting a key milestone, Ijagwu referenced the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the FCCPC and NCC, which establishes a unified framework for implementing the tariff adjustments.
He urged consumers to report unfair practices or concerns through official FCCPC channels for swift resolution.
Ijagwu adds that the FCCPC’s collaboration with the NCC signals a proactive approach to safeguarding consumer rights in the telecom sector, ensuring that tariff adjustments lead to tangible service enhancements rather than burdens on consumers.
