SENATOR OLUREMI Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to providing opportunities for women across all sectors, urging them to secure their rightful place through dedication and perseverance.
Speaking at the State House in Abuja during a courtesy visit by officials from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the National Sports Commission, and other stakeholders, Senator Tinubu stressed the pivotal role of women in the country’s sporting achievements.
The visit, led by Comptroller General of Customs Wale Adeniyi, was organised to honour her as the Grand Patron of the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Championship, set to take place in April.
Expressing her gratitude for the recognition, the First Lady highlighted Nigeria’s prominence in global sports, crediting the unwavering determination of female athletes.
She encouraged accomplished sportswomen to mentor and inspire young Nigerian girls, sharing not just their triumphs but also the challenges they overcame.
“I can see that out of the four Deputy Comptroller Generals here, three of you are women. That tells me you have worked tirelessly to reach the top,” Senator Tinubu said. “When you have a platform, it is not just about you—lift others and encourage them.”
She further called on Nigerian female athletes abroad to return home and motivate the next generation, emphasising that their stories of resilience and success could ignite ambition in young talents.
Acknowledging her growing reputation as a strong advocate for women in sports, Senator Tinubu welcomed the responsibility of serving as Grand Patron for the 2025 African Women’s Club Volleyball Championship.
Nigeria is set to host the tournament, with the Customs Service representing the nation on the court.
Comptroller General Adeniyi, while presenting her with the official designation, praised the First Lady’s contributions to female sports development in Nigeria.
“There is a popular saying that when a woman puts her hand to the plough, the earth itself will respond to her,” he remarked.
“Your initiatives and generosity are an unparalleled source of inspiration.”
In his remarks, Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olapade, lauded the administration of President Bola Tinubu, stating that the government’s commitment to sports, particularly for women, has opened new avenues for female participation.
“The Nigerian girl child can now truly hold her head up high,” he added.
As part of the ceremony, Senator Tinubu was presented with her official kit as Grand Patron of the championship.
The highly anticipated tournament will feature 23 other African nations competing alongside hosts Nigeria from April 1 to 14, 2025.
