THE OGUN State Government has declared the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport as the top aviation facility in Nigeria and West Africa.
Officials made this claim during a briefing with the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC), where they detailed the airport’s unique features and future potential.
The airport, according to Transportation Commissioner Gbenga Akinsanya, features a 4km runway, the longest in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
It is designed to handle international flights and wide-body aircraft, with its 5,000-hectare facility set to include hotels, amusement parks, and cinemas.
Akinsanya stated that while the runway has been completed, the airport awaits the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s (NCAA) approval for commercial operations.
Airport Manager Captain Olumide explained the project’s delay, citing efforts to secure a full operating permit under ENCAS 2023 standards.
He highlighted the distinction between an Aerodrome Certificate and the sought-after permit, underscoring the airport’s aim to achieve a higher operational standard.
Members of LAAC, after touring the facility, rated it as the best in the country.
LAAC Chairman Sulaiman Idris praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for his leadership in advancing the project.
