Lagos Assembly Tightens Security Over Speakership Logjam

By JKNewsMedia

SECURITY MEASURES at the Lagos State House of Assembly have been significantly beefed up as the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, prepares to challenge his removal and reclaim his position.

Tensions have actually escalated following his impeachment, which has divided the Assembly and its supporters.

In a notice issued on Sunday, January 26, Omotayo Adekemi, the acting Clerk of the House, outlined the new protocols.

Staff and legislative aides are required to present valid identity cards for entry into the Assembly complex.

The notice emphasised that anyone without proper identification would be denied access.

Obasa, who was impeached while in the United States, was replaced by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda.

His removal on January 13, 2025, came after allegations of financial mismanagement and misconduct.

However, Obasa has rejected the allegations, describing them as “impossible,” and declared his impeachment unconstitutional.

Speaking to supporters at his residence in Ikeja upon his return, Obasa stated, “I remain the Speaker until due process is followed.

“The allegations against me, including claims of spending N16 billion on a gate and N40 billion on vehicles, are baseless. Let them remove me the proper way.”

The former Speaker also alleged that over 200 policemen invaded his residences during his impeachment, preventing his family from leaving.

However, Lagos State Commissioner of Police Ishola Olawale dismissed these claims as false. “There is no evidence of such an incident,” Olawale said, adding that maintaining calm across Lagos remains his priority.

The Commissioner further assured the public that the police would ensure law and order outside the Assembly premises during Monday’s plenary session.

“We have no business inside the Assembly. But outside, there will be no disruption. Anyone attempting to cause unrest will face decisive action,” he stated.

Today, Monday’s plenary session will mark the third sitting presided over by Speaker Mojisola Meranda since Obasa’s removal, while confirming that Meranda has directed a rotation of security personnel to strengthen vigilance around the complex.

Political observers also believe Obasa’s return could deepen the division among lawmakers and supporters.

Other analysts warn that the crisis threatens to overshadow legislative proceedings, with both factions unwilling to back down.
