LASG Accelerates Efforts to Boost Water Supply, Targets 100million Gallons Daily

RESIDENTS OF Lagos are set to experience a significant improvement in water supply as the state government advances efforts to produce at least 100 million gallons of pipe-borne water daily from major waterworks.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to tackle water shortages and enhance access to clean water across the metropolis.

During an inspection tour of the Adiyan Water Works I and II on Tuesday, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to providing sustainable water solutions.

Accompanied by senior government officials, Wahab received detailed briefings from consultants and the Lagos State Water Corporation’s management on the progress of key projects.

“This is a priority project for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” Wahab stated.

“Adiyan I has a capacity of 70 million gallons per day, while Adiyan II will contribute an additional 11 million gallons per day. With further input from the Iju and Ishashi Water Works, we are working towards achieving a total daily supply of 100 million gallons.”

A crucial component of this plan is the ongoing installation of an 8.1km water pipeline network.

The 1600mm diameter ductile iron pipes will facilitate efficient distribution of treated water to multiple communities across the state.

“The laying of these pipes is a major milestone, and we are monitoring progress closely,” Wahab noted.

“This project is expected to be completed by the last quarter of 2027 and will significantly improve Lagos’ water supply infrastructure.”

The Commissioner commended the work completed so far, expressing optimism that more households would soon gain access to pipe-borne water.

“Reaching 100 million gallons per day means a substantial number of homes will have a reliable supply of clean water, fulfilling a key objective of this administration,” he added.

Project Manager for Salini Nigeria Limited, Mr. Cifola Daniele, provided technical insights, assuring that the 320,000 cubic meters per day water treatment plant at Adiyan II would meet World Health Organization (WHO) standards.

“This initiative, expected to be completed within 36 months, will address water scarcity challenges in Lagos,” Daniele stated.

Managing Director of the Lagos Water Corporation, Engineer Muktar Tijani, acknowledged the state government’s proactive approach.

He noted that key concerns raised during the tour had been addressed, ensuring the project remains on track.

Other officials present included Special Adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu; Permanent Secretaries Dr. Gaji Omobolaji (Office of Environmental Services) and Engr. Mahamood Adegbite (Office of Drainage Services); GM LASWAMO, Engr. Femi Afolabi; and Executive Director of Operations, Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Lanke Taiwo.

Wahab reaffirmed the government’s dedication to building a water-secure Lagos. “Water remains a key area of investment and development. We are determined to ensure that every resident has access to clean, safe water,” he concluded.
