A SURGE in the use of technology to enforce traffic laws in Lagos State has shown significant results.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) revealed that its Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices captured 20,000 vehicles violating traffic regulations in 2024.
This achievement highlights the agency’s strides in modernising traffic law enforcement.
The TMS devices, deployed in July 2023, have targeted infractions like illegal parking, traffic obstruction, and unauthorised passenger pick-ups at undesignated stops.
This advancement not only underscores the devices’ effectiveness but also reflects improved compliance among road users.
Interestingly, the reliance on physical apprehensions by LASTMA dropped noticeably. In 2024, 16,824 vehicles were physically apprehended, compared to 22,927 in 2023—a decline of 6,103 cases.
This reduction can be attributed to ongoing public enlightenment campaigns educating motorists on the importance of adhering to traffic rules.
Training initiatives have also played a critical role. Nearly all of LASTMA’s 4,335 staff members have undergone training in emotional intelligence, work ethics, and human rights by December 2024, as part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a more efficient agency.
The enhanced training has boosted professionalism and public trust in the agency’s operations.
To promote transparency, LASTMA has implemented safeguards against unauthorised fine collections, including a toll-free line for reporting misconduct. Despite this progress, challenges remain.
In 2024, 26 LASTMA officers faced disciplinary action for various offences.
These measures signal the agency’s intent to uphold high standards of integrity and accountability among its personnel.
The state government’s commitment to deploying body cameras for LASTMA officers promises further improvements in traffic law enforcement.
Until then, the TMS devices remain central to the agency’s efforts in ensuring order on Lagos roads.
As Lagos State continues to expand its traffic management initiatives, LASTMA’s successes in 2024 provide a foundation for further advancements in 2025.
The agency’s focus on technology, staff training, and public accountability shows promise for a more efficient and transparent traffic system.
