MONDAY OKPEBHOLO has officially taken office as the 6th Governor of Edo State, marking a new chapter in the state’s leadership.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at 11:55 GMT on Tuesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, with Edo State Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okubowa, administering the oath.
Okpebholo’s inauguration comes two months after his victory in the September 21 election, where he defeated his main contender, Asue Ighodalo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with 291,667 votes against Ighodalo’s 247,274.
Also, Okpebholo succeeds Godwin Obaseki, who served two terms from 2016 to 2024.
The ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu.
Governors from Kwara, Imo, Ogun, and Lagos states were also present. Okpebholo’s running mate, Dennis Idahosa, was sworn in as the state’s Deputy Governor.
In his inaugural address, Okpebholo expressed gratitude to the people of Edo State for their support, calling the event a triumph of democracy.
He pledged to prioritize the security of the state, enhance infrastructure, and promote small businesses as part of his efforts to strengthen the state’s economy.
Okpebholo also said that his administration would focus on creating a secure environment for citizens, improving road networks, and fostering economic growth.
He also promised to work in resonance with the challenges faced by the people of Edo, with a strong commitment to fulfilling the mandate entrusted to him by the people.
