Nigeria to Unveil Integrated Resource Plan for Power Sector Reform

By Jemimah Wellington, JKNewsMedia Reporter

THE FEDERAL Government has announced it is set to launch the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to drive the country’s power sector towards universal electrification, sustainability, and private sector collaboration.

Scheduled for Thursday in Abuja, the unveiling will be backed by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the UK Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (UKNIAF).

The IRP is designed as a strategic roadmap to ensure least-cost electrification while aligning with Nigeria’s energy transition goals, as stated by the media release issued.

It also aims to phase out reliance on self-generation, a common practice among households and businesses due to unreliable grid power.

The plan also prioritises inclusivity, efficiency, and long-term investment in electricity infrastructure.

As part of the unveiling, the statement notes that a stakeholder engagement session will bring together key players from the private sector to explore investment opportunities and partnerships.

This forum will also facilitate discussions on private sector participation in the National Integrated Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan (NIEP-SIP) and the IRP’s implementation.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, will deliver a keynote address titled Strategic Vision for Nigeria’s Energy Future, outlining the government’s commitment to sustainable and cost-effective electricity supply.

The event will also host members of the inter-ministerial working group, responsible for policy coordination and execution within the power sector.

Industry analysts say they see the IRP as a crucial step towards addressing Nigeria’s chronic power deficit and describe it as a demand that far exceeds supply, and one that is expected to provide a structured approach to bridging the gap while ensuring a sustainable and reliable electricity sector.

They also said the government’s collaboration with the UK FCDO and UKNIAF proves the significance of international partnerships in driving reforms.
