Behold! The Oldest Kingdoms In Nigeria Before The Colonial Rule

NRI KINGDOM: The Nri Kingdom in the Awka area present Anambra State was founded in 900AD by Nri (One of the two sons of Eri) in north central Igboland and is considered the oldest kingdom in Nigeria and West Africa.

The Nsukka-Awka-Orlu axis is said to be the oldest location of Igbo settlements and therefore, homeland of the Igbo people.

BININ KINGDOM: The Benin Kingdom was founded in 1100AD “it’s amongst the oldest and most developed in West Africa”.

It grew out of Igodomigodo and lasted until it was annexed by the British in 1897.

OYO EMPIRE: The Oyo Empire was founded in 1300-1896AD by Oranmiyan as the first OBA also known as Alaafin of oyo.

It was one of the most politically driven kingdoms from the mid-17th to the late 18th century and held sway of the other kingdoms in Yorubaland.

IGALA: The kingdom was founded in 1600 century-1900AD by the Igala people, with the “Àtá” serving as the Igala Emperor, national father and spiritual head even though she was a woman.

The capital of Igala land is at Idah. The Igala has been influenced by the Benin and Jukun, and is made up of migrants of these groups who settled and mixed with the native Igala populations who were descendants of Eri in Igbo land.

This is why verse majority of IGALA people speaks Igbo fluently.
