Onyeka Onwenu, Nigerian Singer and Actress, Dies at 72

ONYEKA ONWENU, a celebrated Nigerian singer and actress, has died at 72.

She reportedly collapsed shortly after an event at Banana Island, Lagos, and was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she passed away.

This incident occurred at the birthday party of Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

An eyewitness at the party confirmed the news and lamented: “It’s very sad.

Onyeka Onwenu performed at Stella Okoli’s birthday today and then slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital but couldn’t make it,” the witness said.

Her Career Span

Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album “For the Love of You” in 1981. Known for hits like “One Love,” she gained fame with albums such as “In The Morning Light” and “Dancing In The Sun.”

She also starred in notable films, including “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “Lionheart.”

In addition to her artistic achievements, Onwenu served in politics.

She was the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and later became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

In 2011, she received the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

Onwenu was born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria.

She has been recognized as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music and a significant figure in the entertainment industry.

Her contributions to music, film, and society have earned her numerous awards and accolades.

Despite her death, her legacy as an influential artist and public figure will endure.
