PLANS FOR Lagos to host the E1 World Championship in September 2025 are in motion as organisers of the all-electric race boat competition arrived in the state on Monday for an exploratory tour of its waterways infrastructure.
This assessment aims to ensure the smooth hosting of the global sporting event.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed the event’s sponsors at the State House in Marina, assuring them of Lagos’ readiness.
The delegation, led by Marlene Ngoyi Mvidia, CEO of Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), included former Ivory Coast footballer Didier Drogba, E1 Racing Chairman Alejandro Agag, and Strategic Adviser Pablo Agag.
Sanwo-Olu described the tournament as an opportunity to showcase Lagos as an African model city and a hub for global sporting events.
He emphasised that the state has the infrastructure, manpower, and hospitality required to successfully host the championship.
Drogba, a key advocate for the E1 sport in Africa, highlighted the tournament’s potential to inspire young athletes and promote sustainability.
He noted that Africa must not be left behind in pioneering environmentally friendly sporting innovations.
The event has also attracted global sporting figures, including NBA star LeBron James and former tennis champion Rafael Nadal.
