FG Refutes Claims of 65% Electricity Tariff Hike, Calls for Accurate Reporting

MISINFORMATION SURROUNDING Nigeria’s electricity tariffs has sparked controversy, following reports that the Federal Government plans a 65% price hike.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Energy, Olu Arowolo Verheijen, on Monday, dismissed the claims, stating that her remarks at a recent World Bank-sponsored conference in Tanzania were misrepresented.

Moreover, Verheijen, who presented Nigeria’s $32 billion electricity expansion plan at the event in Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania, clarified that she did not announce an imminent tariff increase.

Rather, she explained that the current electricity tariffs, following adjustments for Band A consumers in 2024, now cover approximately 65% of the actual cost of power supply, with the federal government subsidising the remaining portion.

She also reiterated the government’s commitment to fairer pricing, improving electricity access, reducing outages, and ensuring that vulnerable Nigerians remain protected.

She noted that her response comes as news reports misinterpreted her statement, leading to widespread concerns over an impending tariff surge.
