SET TO revolutionize Nigeria’s health sector, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) Seoul, South Korea.
The two agencies said the strategic partnership aims to enhance regulatory frameworks, boost local pharmaceutical production, and improve the overall quality of health commodities in Nigeria.
The signing ceremony, held at NAFDAC’s headquarters in Abuja, they note, marks a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its health sector as the collaboration aligns with President Tinubu’s #RenewedHopeAgenda, focusing on improving health outcomes, ensuring health security, and fostering a thriving healthcare industry.
During the signing ceremony, NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, emphasized the importance of this partnership. “This MoU with South Korea represents a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance the quality and safety of health commodities in Nigeria. We are committed to implementing the highest standards in pharmaceutical regulation to protect the health of our citizens,” she stated.
South Korea’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Kim Young-Chae, also expressed optimism about the collaboration. “We are pleased to partner with NAFDAC to support Nigeria’s health sector. This MoU will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and technology, fostering innovation and improving health outcomes in both countries,” he said.
Towards enhancing regulatory frameworks, the MoU is said to outline a comprehensive plan for regulatory cooperation between NAFDAC and South Korea’s MFDS, as the partnership will see the exchange of best practices and regulatory expertise, helping Nigeria’s agency to strengthen its oversight capabilities.
By adopting advanced regulatory standards, Nigeria aims to ensure that its health commodities meet international safety and efficacy benchmarks, a release issued on the MoU states.
Noting that one of the core objectives of the MoU is to support local pharmaceutical manufacturing in Nigeria and boost local production, the South Korea’s advanced pharmaceutical industry is expected to serve as a model for innovation and quality assurance.
Through this partnership, Nigerian manufacturers will also gain access to cutting-edge technologies and processes, enabling them to produce high-quality medicines that can compete both locally and globally as this initiative is expected to attract significant investment into Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector, driving economic growth and creating jobs.
The collaboration will also focus on combating the proliferation of counterfeit and substandard drugs in Nigeria as well as improve health outcomes.
Also, by leveraging South Korea’s technological expertise in tracking and monitoring pharmaceutical products, NAFDAC aims to enhance its capacity to detect and eliminate fake medicines from the market as a critical step in safeguarding public health and ensuring that Nigerian patients receive effective and safe treatments.
It is also towards ensuring health security in times of health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, robust regulatory frameworks and international cooperation are crucial, the statement said.
The MoU includes provisions for joint efforts in emergency preparedness and response as South Korea’s experience in managing health emergencies will provide valuable insights for NAFDAC, strengthening Nigeria’s ability to respond to future health challenges effectively.
