WITH THE launch of the Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP), a transformative change has been initiated in Lagos State’s health sector.
This innovative digital cloud platform is poised to revolutionize data transmission and management across all state-owned healthcare facilities.
Developed through a collaborative effort involving the State Government, health technology company eClat, and Interswitch Limited, SHIP aims to create a seamless and secure system for patient data movement.
The initiative is managed by Digital Health Platform Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) that includes the Lagos Ministry of Health, Interswitch, and eClat.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu oversaw the signing of the Concession Agreement between the Office of Public Private Partnership (PPP) and Digital Health Platform Limited, marking a significant step towards the full deployment of SHIP.
This agreement was also witnessed by the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro.
The digital system is designed to replace manual data-sharing methods, enhancing data protection and privacy for patients. Governor Sanwo-Olu described SHIP as a “transformational step” in simplifying data collection and usage in the health sector, highlighting the state’s bold move to leverage technology for efficient healthcare delivery.
With the integration of this new platform, Lagos State aims to improve resource allocation and enable decision-makers to analyze and evaluate the impact of health interventions.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of data privacy, assuring the public that the database would be fully protected and that the Ministry of Science and Technology had thoroughly vetted the project.
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, pointed out the substantial amount of data generated by the state’s healthcare facilities, underscoring the need for a robust digital infrastructure like SHIP to eliminate data repetition and errors.
Interswitch Group Managing Director Mitchell Elegbe noted that the platform would facilitate smooth data flow between health institutions and provide seamless payment options for patients, while ensuring the security of patient information.
The launch of SHIP signifies a major advancement in Lagos State’s healthcare system, promising increased efficiency, enhanced data security, and improved patient care through cutting-edge technology.
