PRESIDENT BOLA Tinubu has affirmed his past participation in peaceful protests against military rule while emphasizing the importance of non-violence.
He made this statement while receiving the Letter of Credence from Richard Mills Jr., the new United States Ambassador to Nigeria, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu, on Thursday, highlighted the strong relationship between Nigeria and the United States, underscoring the shared belief in democracy and freedom.
He recalled the efforts of previous US ambassadors like Howard Jeter during Nigeria’s transition to democracy.
“Our relationship with America is rich. We believe in democracy and freedom,” Tinubu said.
“During the military era, we made our voices heard against dictatorship through peaceful protests without destroying property. We have worked hard to ensure 25 years of unbroken democracy and will continue to uphold it.”
Tinubu stressed the importance of protests in democracy but condemned any demonstrations that result in violence or destruction.
He called for the US to enhance its focus on Africa, recognizing Nigeria’s strategic role as the continent’s largest democracy.
“Demonstrations are part of democracy, but we will never encourage any protests that lead to the destruction of lives and property,” Tinubu said.
“Nigeria is ready to play its role as the largest democracy in Africa and seeks a beneficial partnership with the US to foster economic growth.”
Ambassador Mills assured US support for Nigeria’s democracy and pledged to strengthen the bilateral relationship, focusing on both democratic values and economic cooperation.
He announced the creation of a special office at the US Embassy to collaborate with Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on cybercrime.
Earlier, President Tinubu received Letters of Credence from Aiyub Bin Omar, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Nigeria, and Phild Nani Kereng, High Commissioner of Botswana.
He discussed improving trade balance with Malaysia and emphasized economic diversification as a key agenda for Nigeria.
His remarks come amid reports of a planned youth-led nationwide protest against economic hardship, set to begin on August 1.
He said the federal government is urging organizers to reconsider the demonstration.
