NIGERIA’s CIVIL service continues to grapple with the issue of ghost workers, as efforts intensify to address employees abroad who still collect salaries without formal resignation.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, disclosed these updates during a press briefing to mark her first 100 days in office.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently mandated at the 2024 Civil Service Awards that all civil servants who relocated abroad while still on the payroll must refund the salaries earned during their absence.
Walson-Jack confirmed that while some have returned to work, others resigned voluntarily.
She disclosed that the process is ongoing, using the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPIS) for monitoring compliance.
Walson-Jack also addressed salary harmonisation, a contentious issue among civil servants.
She revealed the National Wages, Income, and Salary Commission, in collaboration with a Presidential Salary Committee, is actively resolving discrepancies.
A prior wage award preceding the minimum wage adjustment had already improved earnings for many workers, she noted.
