A FIRE outbreak on a dry crude storage barge at Cawthorne Channel 1 in Rivers State has been successfully contained, averting a major disruption to oil and gas operations in the area.
The blaze, which ignited at approximately 2:10 p.m. on Wednesday, started on the BESTAF5 barge before spreading to adjacent barges.
Emergency teams and industry partners quickly intervened, preventing further escalation.
Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) assured the public that operations at the nearby flow station remained unaffected.
The company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, confirmed that all personnel were safe and there were no casualties.
“Thanks to the swift response of our emergency teams and industry partners, the fire was successfully contained,” Soneye stated, emphasising NNPCL’s commitment to safety, environmental protection, and operational integrity.
He said the authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the fire to prevent future occurrences.
