LASAA Disowns Fallen Billboard in Lagos, Sanctions Operator Over Safety Violations

A GIANT billboard in the Surulere area of Lagos State has collapsed twice, injuring residents and damaging properties within Abati Barracks, sparking widespread concerns over public safety.

Military officers and their families in the area have raised urgent alarm over the repeated incidents, calling for immediate intervention.

The Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) has distanced itself from the illegal billboard, confirming that it was never registered under the agency’s regulatory framework.

The agency declared that any advertising structure posing a threat to lives and property in Lagos would not be allowed to stand.

According to LASAA, previous attempts to regulate advertising structures within military, police, and airforce formations in Lagos have been hindered by a lack of support.

The agency insists that it must be allowed to execute its mandate without intimidation to prevent similar dangerous occurrences.

The company responsible for the billboard, identified as Radius Resources Limited, has faced sanctions from LASAA and was suspended on October 24, 2024, due to unethical practices.

The agency stated that the company had no authorisation to reinstall the fallen billboard.

In response to the incident, LASAA issued a stop-work order at the site and formally notified the Nigerian Army of the situation, urging a halt to all construction activities pending a thorough reassessment.

LASAA’s Managing Director, Prince Fatiu Akiolu, emphasised the agency’s commitment to public safety, calling on all stakeholders, including outdoor advertisers and military formations, to comply with established regulations.

He stated, “We must work together to ensure that advertising practices in Lagos are safe, respectful, and sustainable. The safety of our residents is our top priority, and we take incidents like this very seriously.”

The agency also encouraged residents and uniformed personnel to report unsafe billboard installations or regulatory violations, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining safety and structural integrity across the city.

It reinforces the fact that LASAA is responsible for managing and regulating outdoor signage and advertising structures across Lagos State, ensuring compliance with safety and structural integrity standards.
