TRAVELLING BACK campus after a court externship break, six Nigerian Law School students were seized along a dangerous stretch between Benue and Nasarawa states, with their abductors now threatening to execute them if a revised ransom demand of ₦50 million per person is not paid.
The incident occurred on Saturday 26 July as the students journeyed from Onitsha, Anambra State, to the Yola campus of the Nigerian Law School in Adamawa.
They were expected to resume academic activities on Monday 28 July.
The victims were identified by a fellow student, Damilare Adenola, as Rev. Ernest Okafor, Ogbuka Fabian, Nwamma Philip, Okechukwu Obadiegwu, Obalem Emmanuel, and Obiorah David.
A student leader at the Yola campus confirmed they were last heard from shortly before entering a known volatile corridor near the Benue-Nasarawa boundary.
Initial ransom demands reportedly stood at ₦20 million per student. However, the figure has since doubled, and the abductors have warned families and associates against involving security operatives.
A source who overheard a phone call between one of the captives and the kidnappers said the threat was unequivocal.
“They said they will kill them if we refuse to pay the ransom,” the source revealed. “They warned us not to involve the security operatives.
They said they can hear everything happening and insisted that if we want them alive, we must stay silent and comply.”
The Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed awareness of the abduction.
Its spokesperson, Yahaya Suleiman, disclosed that efforts are ongoing in collaboration with the Benue State Command to track and rescue the victims.
Attempts to reach Benue police spokesperson Catherine Anene were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
In 2022, two Nigerian Law School students from the Agbani campus in Enugu State were kidnapped while shopping at the Eke Agbani market.
