The increasing sophistication of drug traffickers along Nigeria’s coastal waters has prompted a stronger response from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Drug syndicates have been using merchant ships, private yachts, and even fishing trawlers to smuggle illicit substances into the country.
Recent operations have yielded significant drug seizures, reinforcing the agency’s decision to establish a dedicated marine command.
During the commissioning of the NDLEA Marine Command Headquarters in Lagos, built with the support of the British government, NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended the collaboration between Nigerian law enforcement and international partners.
He emphasized that tightening security at sea is crucial in the ongoing war against drug trafficking.
The new headquarters is part of broader efforts to strengthen the agency’s maritime capabilities.
Marwa highlighted the interception of over 61 tons of drugs and the arrest of 41 suspects in recent operations.
He also noted that West Africa remains a key transit hub for South American drug cartels, making Nigeria’s coastal security all the more critical.
The British government, represented by Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s anti-drug efforts.
Baxter acknowledged the increased drug detections in both Nigeria and the UK, stressing the importance of continued collaboration.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event, lauded the NDLEA’s achievements, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in tackling the growing threat of drug trafficking in coastal areas.
This strategic investment by the British government and other stakeholders is expected to improve Nigeria’s ability to combat organized crime along its waterways, with enhanced surveillance and coordination between law enforcement agencies.
