Nigeria Revamps Basic Education Curriculum with Practical Skills Focus

By Jemimah Wellington, JKNewsMedia Reporter

BASIC EDUCATION curriculum in Nigeria has undergone a major overhaul, aimed at equipping students with practical and employable skills to address the country’s economic needs.

The Federal Government has introduced 15 new trades into the curriculum, which will be implemented in January 2025.

This initiative seeks to prepare primary and junior secondary school students with modern competencies, ranging from digital literacy to vocational skills.

The updated curriculum, approved by the National Council on Education, represents a shift towards self-reliance and global competitiveness.

Over the next three months, the government plans to finalise preparations, which include training teachers, developing instructional materials, and improving infrastructure in both public and private schools.

Students will now have the opportunity to choose from trades such as plumbing, robotics, garment making, solar installation, and agriculture.

These courses aim to ensure that graduates leave school with skills directly applicable to Nigeria’s economy.

For example, agriculture and processing options will cover crop production, poultry farming, and beekeeping, while digital literacy courses will introduce IT and robotics.

Additional trades include Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) installation, event management, hairstyling, interior design, and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) repairs, among others.

This comprehensive approach underscores the government’s commitment to bridging the skills gap and creating pathways for entrepreneurship and employment.

The curriculum also focuses on modernising the education sector by incorporating emerging technologies and entrepreneurial opportunities, ensuring students are prepared for a rapidly changing world.
