Cross River Assembly Calls for Boundary Review Over Ikun Land Encroachment

By Ofem John Obongha, JKNewsMedia Intern

CROSS RIVER State lawmakers have voiced concerns over an alleged encroachment in Ikun, Biase Local Government Area, by residents of Okon in Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State.

The State House of Assembly has called for immediate government intervention, urging relevant agencies, including the State Boundary Commission, to collaborate with the Federal Boundary Commission in clarifying the boundary lines between the two communities.

Their request aims to prevent potential violence resulting from the dispute.

The Assembly’s resolution followed a motion raised by Hon. Francis Ogban Onette, the representative of Biase Constituency.

Onette expressed alarm, recalling past disturbances and accusing the Okon community of clearing farmland in Ikun as preparation for the upcoming farming season, which he warned could escalate into a communal clash.

He noted that a similar conflict had erupted in 1996 over boundary disputes, causing significant loss.

Onette stated, “Their actions indicate an intent to dominate the Ikun people, a peaceful community. Such provocations could lead to conflict if unchecked.”

He further mentioned that the perceived encroachment might stem from the presence of valuable mineral resources in Ikun, making the area vulnerable to further land disputes.

In response, lawmakers pressed for joint discussions with Abia State officials, urging the deployment of security forces and establishment of checkpoints along the contested boundary to forestall any outbreak of violence.

Legislators reiterated their demand for government intervention to safeguard lives and property, referencing the Nigerian Constitution’s mandate for citizen protection.

Speaker Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem applauded the Assembly’s commitment to safeguarding Ikun residents, pledging that the 10th Assembly would prioritize legislation that supports peace and security for all Cross Riverians.
