NAFDAC Confirms Safety of Local NIVEA Black & White Roll-On Amid EU Alert

NIGERIA’s NATIONAL Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed that the locally produced NIVEA Black & White Invisible Roll-On deodorant is safe for use in Nigeria.

This follows an initial Safety Alert Notification issued on October 31, 2024, after the European Union’s (EU) Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) flagged the deodorant for containing a non-compliant ingredient.

In its latest update dated November 2, 2024, NAFDAC clarified that the Nigerian-manufactured NIVEA Black & White Roll-On does not contain the prohibited substance, 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (Lilial), which led to its ban in the EU. NAFDAC assured consumers that recent investigations confirm the absence of the ingredient, reinforcing the product’s safety.

Beiersdorf, the NIVEA brand owner, also issued a statement affirming that the flagged batch, 93529610, was not distributed in Nigeria.

According to Beiersdorf, the batch had already expired in January 2022 and was compliant with European cosmetic standards at that time.

In response to updated EU regulations, the company phased out Lilial in all NIVEA products globally, with reformulated, Lilial-free products reaching markets, including Nigeria, by 2020.

Beiersdorf emphasized its commitment to consumer safety and global standards, highlighting its ongoing partnership with NAFDAC to ensure that all NIVEA products manufactured locally meet stringent safety requirements.

The company reassured Nigerian consumers that it had informed trade partners to remove outdated products in compliance with the European Cosmetic Product Regulation.
