By Ajibola Olaide, JKNewsMedia Reporter

A COLLECTIVE pledge to ensure a violence-free election marked a pivotal moment in Ghana’s electoral history as all 12 presidential candidates signed a Peace Pact ahead of the 7 December general elections.

The event, held on Thursday, 28 November, at the Kempinski Hotel, Accra, saw candidates committing to resolving disputes through legal channels.

The leading contenders, former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and outgoing Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), affirmed their commitment to peaceful elections.

They urged stakeholders to support national unity and avoid violence.

The National Peace Council (NPC), chaired by Rev Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, facilitated the pact.

Witnesses included Inspector General of Police Dr George Akufo Dampare, Electoral Commission Chairperson Mrs Jean Mensa, and members of the judiciary, traditional, and international communities.

Inspector General Dampare assured voters of enhanced security through a 30-year Strategic Plan for electoral safety.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo promised expedited adjudication of election disputes, citing established judicial frameworks for handling such matters.

The EC Chair, Mrs Mensa, highlighted ongoing efforts to guarantee transparency, while ECOWAS observers assessed preparations and pledged support.

Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, commended Ghana as a beacon of electoral stability, urging other African nations to emulate its practices.
