TELECOMMUNICATIONS PROVIDER Globacom has initiated a wide-ranging network upgrade programme designed to boost connectivity strength, extend service coverage, and accelerate data speeds for users nationwide.
The company in a statement says as part of its bold initiative, it is rolling out hundreds of new base stations and upgrading thousands of 4G LTE sites, reflecting its strategic response to evolving user demands and recent tariff adjustments.
Globacom also said it is areinforcing existing sites nationwide to ensure seamless access, from urban hubs to underserved rural communities.
In areas where road construction has disrupted existing infrastructure, the company is undertaking the costly relocation of fibre optic cables, such as along the Lafia, Akwanga and Funtua-Gusau corridors.
Many of the fibres had suffered vandalism during construction activities. “So, we decided, at a huge cost, to relocate the fibres… in order to bring best-in-class services to customers,” the company stated.
“This aggressive network development is matched by an upgrade in backhaul infrastructure, with microwave and fibre capacities being expanded in parallel with core network upgrades.
“Thousands of LTE sites have already gone live this year, with several hundred more nearing completion. Over the next 12 months, Globacom plans to activate more than 1,000 additional sites with a focus on deepening its LTE penetration,” the company adds.
In parallel, the telco said it is extending fibre connectivity to its hub sites, reinforcing its backbone infrastructure for optimal data and voice service quality.
Globacom adds that it is investing in sustainable operations by scaling up hybrid power solutions across its sites, prioritising battery-based systems over diesel-powered generators in a decisive step toward reducing carbon emissions.
However, the company raised concerns over the continued sabotage of telecoms infrastructure, despite its designation as critical national infrastructure. It urged urgent interventions to halt the deliberate destruction of network assets.
Globacom reaffirmed that these ongoing projects will significantly boost user experience through enhanced service delivery, wider national coverage, and markedly improved internet speeds.
