GTCO Launches Waste for Gas Initiative to Improve Household Energy Access

By JKNewsMedia

THE BID to enhance household energy access and promote sustainable waste management have taken a major step forward with the launch of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc’s (GTCO) “Waste for Gas” project.

The initiative aims to empower women and improve living conditions in underserved communities by distributing 3,000 3kg gas cylinders with burners to low-income households in Obafemi Owode Local Government, Mowe, Ogun State.

Also, the project introduces a structured exchange programme where participating households collect and return plastic waste in exchange for gas cylinders and burners.

This approach reduces reliance on firewood and charcoal, mitigating health risks and environmental degradation while encouraging responsible waste disposal.

GTCO, in collaboration with local government representatives, say they will implement the initiative in two phases.

From February 18th to 21st, 2025, teams will conduct door-to-door visits across 12 wards to identify beneficiaries.

Households still reliant on traditional cooking fuels will be prioritised. The second phase, set for February 22nd and 23rd, 2025, will focus on monitoring and encouraging sustained adoption of gas-powered cooking.

Speaking, GTCO’s Group Chief Executive Officer, (GCEO) Segun Agbaje, described the project as a step towards improving quality of life and fostering economic empowerment.

He said: “At GTCO, we are committed to driving progress, not just through innovative financial solutions but by creating real impact in the communities where we operate. Waste for Gas is about making life easier for families, giving them more time for what truly matters—whether it’s education, meaningful work, or personal development.”

He adds that by promoting clean cooking alternatives, the initiative would support broader environmental and public health goals as GTCO’s ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts will continue to focus on sustainable and scalable interventions that address pressing societal challenges.
