CONCERNS OVER timelines for submission of political parties’ registers of members have led to an adjustment in the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stated in a press release issued from its headquarters in Abuja that the decision followed a meeting with political parties held on Tuesday, 24 March 2026.
INEC, in a press release signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee on Friday, 27 March 2026; also said the concerns raised focus on the timeline earlier fixed for submission of registers, which was scheduled from 1 April 2026 to 21 April 2026.
The commission further stated that it agreed at the meeting to adjust the submission period to align the 21 days prescribed by Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026, with dates to be fixed by political parties themselves.
Political parties have been informed that they are free to determine the dates of their primaries within the approved period from 23 April 2026 to 30 May 2026, according to the statement.
INEC also stated that adherence to this timeline is imperative to ensure a smooth electoral process.
The commission further stated that registers of party members must be submitted not later than 21 days before the conduct of respective primaries.
It noted that the final deadline for submission has been extended to 10 May 2026, from the earlier date of 21 April 2026 contained in the revised timetable.
