LAGOS STATE Government has disclosed its intention to implement a new building code by 2025.
The initiative, as noted, aims to align Lagos with international standards by setting regulations on construction designs, land use, and building materials to foster health, safety, and sustainability.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, revealed this during the Lagos State Executive Council Retreat on Wednesday in Ikeja GRA.
According to Babatunde, the government has partnered with professional bodies, academics, market women, and the public to ensure a participatory approach to the new regulations.
He explained that the code will address critical issues such as building setbacks, environmental safety, and sustainability while combating recurring incidents like building collapses.
It will also streamline building control, planning permissions, and land use regulations to create a safer and more sustainable urban environment.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu affirmed that Lagos will become the first state to domesticate the National Building Code.
He noted that input from all cabinet members was incorporated into the process, ensuring the new code meets the diverse needs of residents.
Sanwo-Olu stressed that the building code would strengthen Lagos’s resilience and address urban challenges while complementing the state’s existing regulatory framework.
