A FIRST female pilot, Lieutenant Changfe Maigari, has been appointed by the Nigerian Navy.

This has been noted as a significant achievement for both the military and gender equality in Nigeria.

Her accomplishment marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s armed forces, highlighting the growing role of women in leadership and service.

Maigari, born in Kaduna but hailing from Langtang North, Plateau State, began her remarkable journey at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 2016.

Graduating as the Best Academic Cadet, she also clinched the prestigious Gold Medal Navy award.

Also, her service aboard the Nigerian Navy Ship Unity further solidified her commitment to excellence.

At the 2024 Nigerian Navy Ceremonial Sunset held in Rivers State, Maigari received the coveted ‘Pilot Wing’ award.

She also shared how her childhood dream, inspired by her father’s service in the Nigerian Air Force, became a reality through perseverance.

“This is not just my achievement; it’s a win for every Nigerian girl dreaming of breaking barriers,” she stated.

Moreover, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, commended Maigari during the ceremony, highlighting her exemplary dedication.

He also detailed the navy’s significant achievements in 2024, including combating oil theft, introducing maritime operations in the North-West, and expanding its fleet with helicopters and patrol vessels.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers also lauded the navy’s efforts in tackling maritime crimes, reiterating the state’s continued support for their operations.

Lieutenant Maigari’s achievement not only breaks gender barriers but sets a precedent for future generations of women in the Nigerian Navy.
