AS LAGOS State rolls out the second phase of the ‘Ounje Eko’ discount market, residents across the state will gain access to affordable food items starting Sunday, September 1.
The initiative, which offers essential food products at a 25% discount, aims to alleviate the financial burden on Lagosians amid rising living costs.
The Ounje Eko programme will be available across all 52 Local Government Areas (LGAs), Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), and within five tertiary institutions in Lagos.
This expansion marks a significant effort by the Lagos State Government to ensure food security and support its residents.
MoneyMaster PSB, a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)-licensed provider of digital financial services, has been retained as the payment service provider for this phase.
The selection comes after their outstanding performance in the first phase of the scheme, launched in March.
Known for their secure and efficient transaction processing, MoneyMaster PSB has been crucial in bridging the financial gap between the banked, underbanked, and unbanked populations.
A government source highlighted MoneyMaster PSB’s innovative payment and collection technology, noting that the bank’s robust infrastructure has been pivotal in ensuring seamless transactions at Ounje Eko discount markets.
The payment service bank is committed to facilitating smooth payment processes, ensuring real-time value for customers and vendors alike.
MoneyMaster PSB expressed excitement about continuing its partnership with the Lagos State Government, emphasizing that the initiative aligns with their mission to enhance lives through accessible financial solutions.
Lagosians Embrace Relief as Ounje Eko Phase II Expands Across 64 Locations
AS THE Phase II of the “Ounje Eko” Food Discount Markets begins, Lagos residents are keen to benefit from the much-needed relief it promises.
The initiative, which proved successful in its first phase, is set to offer more widespread support in response to the rising cost of food items across the state.
At the Lekki Phase 1 location, residents were eager to take advantage of the 25% discount on essential food items.
Mrs. Adeola Adebisi, a mother of three, expressed her appreciation, stating, “With the increasing prices of food, this initiative is timely. It really helps us manage our household expenses.”
Similarly, at the Alausa Secretariat, civil servants took the opportunity to purchase discounted goods during their lunch break.
Mr. John Okoro, a government employee, highlighted the initiative’s positive impact, saying, “This market has made a significant difference.
The high cost of living has been challenging, and this relief is much appreciated.”
To ensure the initiative runs smoothly, the Lagos State government has implemented strong measures across all 64 locations.
By involving local vendors, the programme not only guarantees fresh, locally sourced food items but also stimulates the local economy by providing jobs and supporting small businesses.
Security and orderliness are top priorities, with adequate personnel deployed at each market to ensure a seamless shopping experience.
In Mushin LGA, where markets operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays, residents formed orderly queues, aided by volunteers who assisted with purchases and payment processes.
The government is also exploring digital payment solutions to streamline transactions, reducing the need for cash and ensuring transparency in the process.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, reminded residents to be aware of slight price variations depending on location, urging everyone to participate orderly and positively.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, reinforced the government’s commitment to supporting Lagosians through such impactful initiatives.
He cautioned against the spread of misinformation that could undermine the success of these programmes, reaffirming that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration will continue to introduce measures aimed at easing the economic pressures faced by residents.
As Phase II of “Ounje Eko” continues, the Lagos State government remains focused on providing effective solutions to the food crisis, offering hope to residents during these challenging times.
This is a good one. Good job Sonwo-Olu.
