THE RECONSTRUCTION and expansion of two critical road networks—the Lagos-Ibadan dual carriageway and the Lagos-Sagamu Expressway—have officially commenced, aiming to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety.

President Bola Tinubu launched the project in Sagamu, Ogun State, highlighting its significance for national economic growth and regional connectivity.

The reconstruction, expected to be completed within 24 months, includes the construction of underpasses at Kara, Wawa, Magboro, and Arepo.

Additionally, new flyover bridges will be built at Kilometer 16 near the Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) and Kilometer 37 at Makun, near Sagamu.

Pedestrian bridges will be erected at Arepo, Magboro, NASFAT, Deeper Life, and Redemption Camp to enhance safety for road users.

To further strengthen transportation infrastructure, construction will also begin on the remaining 60 kilometres of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway, stretching from the Sagamu Interchange to Itele.

Represented by Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, Tinubu underscored the strategic importance of the project.

The road remains Nigeria’s busiest route, linking Lagos, the commercial capital, with 17 southern states.

He reiterated that road infrastructure is fundamental to sustaining economic development, improving mobility, and enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians.

The Minister of Works directed that no payments be made to contractors without a valid Advanced Payment Guarantee (APG) certificate at the time of disbursement.

Hon. Akin Alabi, chairman of the House Committee on Works, assured that the committee would collaborate with the Ministry to ensure high-quality roads for Nigerians.

He emphasised that the project’s impact extends beyond Ogun State, contributing significantly to national economic activities.

Ogun State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, commended the federal government for incorporating footbridges in the design to improve pedestrian safety.

The Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, called for the construction of additional flyovers at the Sagamu Junction and advocated for a fire station to bolster emergency response in the area.

Governor Abiodun formally flagged off the project on behalf of President Tinubu, marking the beginning of the much-anticipated road expansion that aims to transform transportation efficiency across the region.
