Kyari Outlines Steps to Tackle Nigeria’s Energy Challenges

By Joke Kujenya

GROUP CHIEF Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, has outlined active steps to tackle Nigeria’s pressing energy issues of affordability, security, and sustainable growth.

He spoke at the Nigeria Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) Annual International Conference.

He highlighted the company’s focus on expanding domestic gas supply, strengthening infrastructure, and fostering collaborative partnerships to drive Nigeria’s energy transformation.

Addressing participants at the 42nd annual gathering, Kyari emphasized that NNPC Ltd’s initiatives aim to resolve the country’s “energy trilemma.”

He noted that strategic projects, including new gas facilities and a robust distribution network, are designed to secure affordable energy access and support sustainable economic growth across the nation.

Highlighting NNPC Ltd’s upcoming projects, Kyari announced plans to roll out 12 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mother stations, mini-LNG plants, and CNG daughter stations in the coming months.

These installations will complement NNPC’s existing supply of 1.6 billion standard cubic feet (bscf) of gas daily to Nigeria’s domestic market, a volume facilitated through a network of infrastructure owned by NNPC Ltd or in collaboration with strategic partners.

Addressing the need for localized fuel supply, Kyari explained NNPC Ltd’s collaborative efforts with private refineries, notably its investment in the Dangote Refinery.

This strategic partnership, he stressed, aligns with NNPC Ltd’s mandate under the Petroleum Industry Act to stabilize fuel supply, alleviate currency pressures, and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on foreign refined products.

In his remarks, Kyari praised President Tinubu’s commitment to reducing forex pressure by bolstering local refining capacities.

The government’s support, Kyari noted, is essential to achieving NNPC Ltd’s objective of strengthening Nigeria’s energy security and ensuring cost-effective, sustainable fuel supplies.

Kyari also revealed that NNPC Ltd is in the process of expanding major gas infrastructure projects, including the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) and Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) pipelines.

These projects, he explained, are central to supporting industrial energy needs and the broader Nigerian economy, positioning the country as a stable energy supplier in the region.

Kyari concluded by calling for continued collaboration, urging stakeholders to leverage technology, innovation, and knowledge-sharing to achieve Nigeria’s energy goals.

He affirmed that NNPC Ltd remains dedicated to its responsibility of driving Nigeria’s energy transformation by securing affordable and sustainable energy for all Nigerians.
