FORMER GROUP Managing Directors (GMDs) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) expressed support for the current leadership’s efforts at a CEO Forum in Abuja.
The forum, held on July 20, 2024, brought together former GMDs, senior management, and key stakeholders to review NNPC’s progress since the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
Discussions covered various aspects of NNPC’s operations, including oil and gas production growth, gas infrastructure projects, refinery rehabilitation, and energy security.
Participants acknowledged the significant strides made under the leadership of Mele Kyari, the first Group CEO to implement the PIA.
Key achievements highlighted during the forum included increased crude oil and gas production, improved funding for upstream operations, and advancements in gas supply and infrastructure for both domestic and export markets.
The rehabilitation of refineries, reduction in carbon emissions, and commercialization of Nigeria’s gas resources were also commended.
The GMDs emphasized the importance of continued strategic improvements, talent management, and a transparent recruitment process that values diversity and inclusion.
Attendees noted that limited public information about NNPC’s operations has led to misleading commentary, urging for more transparency to reflect the company’s achievements accurately.
The former GMDs empathized with the management over the destruction of over seven thousand illegal refineries and the removal of five thousand illegal connections, labeling such acts as criminal and economically sabotaging.
They called for strict sanctions against those hindering oil and gas exploration and production.
Support for host community development provisions in the PIA and the sustainable funding it ensures was reaffirmed.
The forum also called on Government Security Agencies to curb crude oil theft, illegal refining, and pipeline vandalism to foster investment and growth in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
The former GMDs expressed appreciation for the support from all levels of government and Nigerian citizens, hoping for its continuation under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
