The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has reiterated its commitment to revitalizing Nigerian football by collaborating with key stakeholders.
The Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mele Kyari, emphasized the company’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at reshaping and commercializing the sport.
Speaking at the NNPC Towers, Kyari hosted a delegation led by Alhaji Shehu Dikko, Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission.
The delegation included representatives from the International Management Group (IMG) and Afrosport Network.
Kyari expressed NNPC’s dedication to becoming a prime partner in efforts to enhance Nigerian football.
He noted that football is a powerful tool capable of fostering national happiness and driving economic benefits for the company and the nation.
In his address, Dikko highlighted that football significantly contributes to the economies of leading football nations.
He pointed to President Bola Tinubu’s call for immediate steps to revive the sport.
Dikko added that IMG, a promoter of the English Premier League, was enlisted as a technical partner to offer expertise.
A statement by Olufemi O. Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC on
21st November 2024 states that the NNPC Ltd has a historic link to football through its former football club, NNPC FC, Warri, which competed in Division One of the Nigeria National League until its disbandment in 1989.
