TOWARDS ENSURING food security, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, has allocated farmlands to 26 members of the state House of Assembly.
He said the initiative aligns with the federal government’s agricultural resurgence efforts and marks a crucial moment in the state’s drive to become Nigeria’s food basket.
During a ceremony, the governor presented letters of allocation to commemorate the first anniversary of the 10th legislature at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, emphasizing that the gesture aims to enable lawmakers to actively participate in agricultural production, thus contributing to the state’s food security goals.
He stated, “I recall that I had promised to allocate agricultural land to all Ogun State legislators as part of our food security and agricultural resurgence initiative, which aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda. Today, I am pleased to fulfill that promise and present allocation letters to the Speaker and 25 House members. This initiative will empower you to grow what you eat and eat what you grow, supporting our vision to make Ogun State the breadbasket of the nation.”
The governor praised the Assembly members for their dedication to democracy, good governance, and the welfare of the citizens. He noted that their legislative efforts over the past year have been instrumental in advancing the state’s progress and development.
“In the last year, the lawmakers have passed numerous bills and resolutions aimed at improving the lives of our people. Their tireless efforts, unwavering integrity, and collaborative spirit with the executive have positioned Ogun State as one of the best in the country,” Abiodun remarked.
He stressed the importance of their roles, saying, “For each of us, whether in the Executive or Legislative branch, history has presented a rare opportunity to lead and serve the people who have placed their hopes and aspirations on our ability to deliver the much-needed dividends of democracy. In doing so, we must understand and decide which side of the divide we want to be on and how we wish to be remembered.”
Governor Abiodun assured the lawmakers of his administration’s commitment to working closely with them on key initiatives that would further drive the state’s development. He pledged to prioritize investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and technology to ensure Ogun State remains competitive and prosperous.
“Together, we have a great task ahead. The expectations of our people are vast. We must strive to create an inclusive society where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive,” the governor noted.
Earlier, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, reflected on the past year as turbulent and filled with tension but credited their desire to provide purposeful representation for seeing them through. He commended Governor Abiodun for the complete renovation and restoration of the Assembly complex, including the addition of 24 new toilets and restored water supply in the legislators’ offices.
Rt. Hon. Elemide assured the governor of the Assembly’s continued cooperation in enacting laws that would fast-track the state’s socio-economic development, emphasizing that members remain committed to representing their constituents’ interests.
