A THOROUGH reassessment of the newly announced governing boards for Nigeria’s tertiary institutions has been mandated by President Bola Tinubu preceding their planned inauguration and retreat.
The Federal Ministry of Education recently disclosed the nominees for positions such as chairmen, pro-chancellors, and board members for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
An inauguration and retreat for these nominees was scheduled for May 31.
However, widespread public criticism emerged, highlighting that the nominations did not fairly represent the country’s federal character. Some states received a single nomination, while others received multiple.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, in a statement issued 3:03pm today, May 23, 2024, states that acknowledging this feedback, President Tinubu has called for a comprehensive review of the nominees.
He emphasized his commitment to upholding the constitutional principle of federal character, ensuring equitable representation across all regions of Nigeria.
The review aims to address these concerns by ensuring a balanced national spread and adequate representation for all parts of the country.
