Soyinka reflects on his 90-year life as a beacon for activism and creative expression, highlighting his enduring relevance in the arts.

Born on July 13, 1934, Wole Soyinka became the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986.

His work, known for its poetic richness and deep exploration of human existence, has earned him global recognition.

His education began at University College, Ibadan, and continued at the University of Leeds in the UK, where he honed his craft.

Soyinka’s contributions have been celebrated with numerous awards, including the Benson Medal from the Royal Society of Literature in 1990, the Academy of Achievement’s Golden Plate Award in 2009, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2012, and the Europe Theatre Prize in 2017.

African Voices Playmakers airs on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. on DSTV Channel 401, with repeats at noon, Sunday at 4:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Monday at 4:00 a.m.
