STRATEGIC DISCUSSIONS on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital transformation took centre stage as President Bola Tinubu met with Google executives in Paris on Wednesday.
The talks, aimed at forging a robust partnership, focused on expanding Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and positioning the country as a global technology hub.
Accompanied by Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani, President Tinubu commended Google CEO Sundar Pichai for the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s technological advancement.
Google’s engagement seeks to drive economic growth by leveraging AI, cloud computing, and digital innovation to enhance global competitiveness.
The collaboration prioritises initiatives such as expanding broadband access, equipping Nigerians with essential digital skills, and fostering AI-driven research and innovation.
Greater cloud adoption across industries and policies that reinforce Nigeria’s place in the global digital economy were also central to the discussions.
President Tinubu stressed that this aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on economic diversification through industrialisation, technology, and innovation.
The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy will oversee the framework, while the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) will coordinate efforts with the private sector to ensure a nationwide impact.
Pichai reaffirmed Google’s commitment, stating, “Nigeria has an incredible opportunity to lead in AI and digital innovation in Africa.
Google is excited to continue working with the Nigerian government to create an ecosystem that fosters innovation and economic growth.”
Minister Tijani described the partnership as a key opportunity to fast-track Nigeria’s technological advancement.
He reiterated that AI and digital transformation must provide tangible benefits for businesses and citizens nationwide.
President Tinubu acknowledged Nigeria’s potential as a major player in the global technology space.
He assured Google of a business-friendly environment that attracts strategic investments from leading tech firms. Discussions will continue to deepen collaboration and accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation.
