OF THE 164 World Trade Organization (WTO) member states, 58 have supported a proposal from the African Group to re-elect Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Director-General.
The proposal, made during a WTO General Council meeting on July 22, urges the initiation of the reappointment process soon.
Adebayo Thomas, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, confirmed this in Abuja.
He highlighted those members debated the issue and acknowledged Okonjo-Iweala’s significant contributions to the organization.
Ambassador Abdulhamid Adamu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WTO, noted that members praised Okonjo-Iweala’s efforts and unanimously affirmed she deserved reappointment.
The General Council Chair has been asked to begin the consultation process for the appointment immediately.

Responding to the support, Okonjo-Iweala expressed gratitude and assured she would consult with her family before making a final decision.
