GOVERNOR SHERIFF Oborevwori’s urban renewal plans are now delivering visible results across Delta State’s urban centers, according to a statement issued by his press unit.

The Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr. Charles Aniagwu, reiterated this on Monday in Warri.

He spoke after inspecting the reconstruction of Upper and Lower Erejuwa Road, Esisi Road, and Hospital Road in Warri.

Aniagwu, accompanied by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, and the acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Engr. Solomon Aghagba, highlighted the resurfacing of these roads as a testament to the governor’s commitment to urban renewal.

“Before we came here, we inspected roads in Sapele,” Aniagwu said. “We aim to clean up the Sapele axis and will soon commence work on those roads.”

In Warri, the commissioner reviewed roads overseen by the Ministry of Works (Highways and Urban Roads), led by Comrade Reuben Izeze. “Hospital Road needs some completion,” he noted.

“The Local Government mishandled a 130-meter stretch, but we will address this with the governor to ensure the corridor is properly cleaned up.”

Aniagwu praised the contractors’ efforts, stating the governor would soon commission these roads. “Our urban renewal programme is yielding good results,” he added.

“The governor’s intent to do more for the people is becoming evident, and the people are pleased.”

Addressing compensation for structures in Sapele, Aniagwu explained, “We will compensate those whose structures are legitimately on the right of way.

However, no compensation will be given to those who encroached on pre-existing roadways.”

He emphasized the importance of drainage systems to the durability of roads.

“We ensure dual side drains where necessary, based on topography and water flow, to extend the lifespan of the roads by channeling flood water properly,” Aniagwu said.

Aniagwu assured the public that the government constructs roads that meet the needs of the people, honouring the mandate given by the electorate.

“Governor Oborevwori is dedicated to serving Delta’s residents to the best of his ability,” he affirmed.

Regarding failed federal roads in the state, Aniagwu mentioned ongoing interventions and urged the Federal Government to expedite rehabilitation efforts.

“Some roads, like the Asaba-Onitsha route, are under contract. The contractor is expected to return to the site soon,” he noted, highlighting the difficulties motorists face on these roads.

Aniagwu also inspected the recently completed Obi-Ibabu-Ibabu Road in Ndokwa West Local Government Area but expressed dissatisfaction with its finishing.
